M-Code plate

Post by BernardSamba »

Hi,
I have just removed a few layers of paint from my M-code plate as it was getting hard to read. I have got down to what looks like a clear lacquer over the base metal. I have only ever seen it painted in interior body colour but it looks as though it was originally unpainted.

Any thoughts on this?

I am not 100% sure but I think it might have been painted. The one on the fresh air box was unpainted.
It's too long ago that I took mine of the bulkhead when I restored my bus and can't remember if I cleaned mine up.
It doesn't have paint on it now. I have to see if I have any photographs from before restauration.

Cheers,
Gertjan

Hi Bernard hope you are well!
The m code plate was fitted to the division behind driver's seat. It was fitted with two slotted domed screws and then sprayed body colour. Almost as if it was fitted to the body before paint and fit out as a build code sheet to specify what should be fitted. The VIN code plate for your year was fitted at the end of the line I IMAGINE and is unpainted.
Your paint strip down would reveal the virgin anodized alloy plate which MAY appear a perfect lacquered surface. So many restorations get the plate blasted damaged or even eaten away in de rusting!

Thanks Graham,

I am half thinking that it must have been painted as the first guy to paint the interior took the plate off and it has not been on the van since (two re-sprays more since then).
I like the look of it as is so will re-mount it naked.

The engine bay plate is definately not painted so the two will match, sort of.

My 01/65 has not been re painted except areas from a rear end shunt! I have a picture of the cab division showing my m plate was covered by Devon fitting a transverse awning rail. This 'looks' like the painted m code plate was fitted with two unpainted screws! So maybe the m code plate was hung on a wire and sprayed at the same time as the body. I will look next time I go to deep storage location.
I cannibalised the bus by steaing the transverse rail and fitting this in my 09/64

Well, it is on there, can't believe that I managed to find the original screws kicking around in a box of odds and ends that I started 30 years ago!

Lets see if I like it or not, may get it painted.

As an update, I applied for my certificate on the 18th June and it arrived here in Spain from Germany today. Excellent service if a little pricey.
