Minor resto on 65 microbus (Poppy)

Post by Nocky »

Thought I’d show the work being undertaken on my new ride. As expected with a Cali import, there is always going to be some minor attention needed. I was aware of the need for the new near side rear wheel arch which came with the bus when I brought it. But after some investigation, other work has been identified, namely ...front wheel arch outer skin, front near side outrigger, front valance, near side sill.
Other work being done is; repair front panel stone chips, repair front panel dent, repair rear off side corner dent, paint whole near side, paint new US spec bumpers \ towel rails \ overriders, paint new rear splash pans.
Will post pics as work gets done. Still well happy with it, despite the unknown work.

Been a busy few months, all of the underside was cleaned of old road crud and donkeys years of underseal, it was then coated with a por15 liquid and left to dry. We now moved onto fitting the new USA bumpers (As original spec) these are new, and also fitting original and restored safari windows and 6 pop outs (As per the original spec from m codes on birth certificate.
After this, we will be costing the who,e underside with gravitax before fitting the new belly pans.

So more progress today, fitted rear bumper and my new second hand autocraft towbar (Thanks magic8ball) I also tried to reconstitute the heating system by adding the pipe I was missing.... here is where I encountered some issues. I’d brought some heating pipes from geoff (Magic8ball) and was sure 1 if not more would fill the gap I had. The problem is, the pipes are 50mm ish diameter, but at one point, the pipes need to go over the chassis / axle. And at that point it narrows to under 25mm. The vw original pipes will in no way squash to that thickness. I did have it seemingly correct on the other side, so I removed one pipe To check that, and here is where I got confused, on the “good side” there seems to be a metal pipe over the chassis that the 2 pipes connect to, but I’m missing this pipe on the one side. I ended up with a bit of a bodge job and will look again when the engine comes out at some point in the future, but would welcome advice please on what it should be like.

Bit more spannering done by myself (I’ve got a great body work guy, he lets me do work whenever I want with use of his garage ‘ tools / ramp) I’ve also had a great deal on the body work he has done as our agreement was, fit it in around other work, but I get a healthy discount.
So today I popped in and fitted trim to over riders, and fitted belly pans.
All left to do in this session of the resto is finish front safaris and apply 2nd coat of gravitex then a camping we will go.
