T2 AS code engine for T1 kombi?!

Post by John82 » Thu Jul 11, 2019 12:39 pm

Hello guys. Has anyone of you T2 AS code 1600cc engine for your T1 split screen van? I know that it’s right to fit a T1 engine, but I want more power & speed...
what’s your opinion of putting a T2 AS CODE 1600cc in a T1 van?

A Type 1 is a beetle whatever it's age. A Type 2 is a van whatever it's age. The engines are the same apart from the brace bar in a bay which is easily removed if you want one of those in a split.
By type 1 engine people are normally referring to the upright cooling arrangement common to both vehicles.
An AS engine is a 50 bhp 1600 twin port that will fit fine.

Type 1 is a Beetle and Type 2 is a van/bus/kombi etc.

However, a T1 is the first version of the Type 2 - i.e. Splitscreen. T2 is a Baywindow and so on, up to the current T6 Transporter.

So an AS code could be from a Type 2 T2, and will fit a Type 2 T1.
