1961 Kombi **SOLD**

Post by ChrisH » Thu Jan 24, 2019 8:13 pm

Hi everyone, I have decided to put my bus up for sale so please have a read of the details and take a look at the pictures.

Imported by me from Oklahoma last March, all the paperwork to register the bus is now with the DVLA and I will hopefully have a registration number in the next few weeks.

Originally the bus left the factory in code L345 Light Grey paint. At some point many years ago the original factory grey was over painted in the Blue that you see now but over time this has flaked away to show the bus as you see it. The bus also had a factory grey interior and when the seats were sent away for recovering the upholsterer matched the material to a piece of the original surviving material to as close as possible.

Straight axle conversion using type 3 equipment (still wide 5)
Front beam is stock width and is non adjustable but uses flipped spindles to get it a bit lower.
New tie rods
New Wolfsburg West shock’s front and rear.

All the brakes have been rebuilt to include:
New wheel cylinders front and rear
New shoes front and rear
New rear drums
New duel circuit Master cylinder with new reservoir
All new metal brake lines and soft lines front and rear with new brake line grommets and new brass T
Brake backing plates were all blasted and painted
FAG wheel bearings Front (Inner & Outer)
FAG wheel bearings Rear
New ISP West bearing caps in the rear

GEARBOX
Gearbox has unknown mileage but is a 4.12 Ring and Pinion. The gearbox was pulled down and everything was re sealed.
New Axle boots
New Clutch cross shaft
New throw out bearing & clips
New front & rear mounts
Painted Axle tubes and in the short distance I have driven the bus it does not grind or pop out of gear.

ENGINE
Engine is a 1600sp with a fresh top end rebuild.
New Pistons and Cylinders, rebuilt single port heads
New Intake
New pushrod tubes and seals
Powder coated engine tin’s
Rebuilt 009 Distributor with new Bosch points, Condensor cap and Rotor.
VolksBits rebuilt/Rebushed Carb
New J tubes, muffler, clamps and new spark plugs.

New Wolfsburg West Fuel tank, fuel filler cap, fuel lines and fuel filter.

All new Wolfsburg West wiring harness and Fuse box
New Battery cables and Ground strap. Everything electrical works as it should.
New Bosch voltage regulator
Interior lights work, Indicators and speedo light (Original speedo that has also been rebuilt)

All tubes for the cables were all cleaned out and had new bushings.
New Clutch cable
New Accelerator cable
New parking brake cables
Bowden tube and wing nut

The M code plate decodes to show that this bus is an original 6 pop out window bus. New pop out windows and seals have been fitted but the original pop out’s and glass are included with the bus. Some are ok and others have lower frame corrosion. All the glass has new seals and this includes the cab door tops and quarter light windows + cab door window felts.

Interior wise the bus is a blank canvass to make your own. The front and rear bench seats have just come back from being reupholstered and re covered and the front seat is the correct 61-62 only hump back style seat. The bus has been fitted with new seatbelts front and rear using correct anchor plates that have been fully welded into place behind the pillars and panels as required. The Front has X2 three point belts and X1 lap belt and the rear is exactly the same set up.

As the mechanical side of the bus is pretty sorted I have concentrated on the bodywork over the past few months and have replaced the following.

Cargo floor edge ( cargo door side )
Passenger side front floor edge
Passenger side inner and outer sill
Passenger side short sill
Passenger side Outriggers and Jacking Points

The drivers side of the bus is original and pretty solid but may need a small amount of work depending on what your preference is. The bus is usable as is but I personally think it would be worthwhile to replace both Dogleg sections (Inner and Outer) in time. I would also spend a little time to repair the inner nose as this has some corrosion but again this could all be done whilst using the bus.

Being a 61 the bus has some nice early features such as the bullet turn signals, small rear window and Ice pick door handles. All door locks are working and use the Ignition key which is a real bonus.

Wheels are bus 15” steels with very good Continental tyres
Front’s are 175/55/15
Rear’s are 185/65/15

I would like to mention that the bus does not have Adjustable rear spring plates and as some of you will know with a lowered bus, getting the rear wheels/tyres off is a workout. It would be well worth the expense to have some on this bus. I also feel the bus would benefit from a good once over from a good mechanic as it’s been stood a fair few months with me and has not been proven on any long runs in my ownership.

Hopefully this will give anyone interested a decent idea of the bus but no matter how much I waffle on I would always say jump in the car and look at it for yourself as my opinion of good may be your idea of bad. Happy to put the kettle on and talk about it to genuinely interested people. The bus is located in a well lit and dry lock up in Sheffield not to far from Junction 33, M1.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

Hi guys, quick update.

New big logo VW hubcaps and new wing mirrors now fitted and I have also completed the paperwork to register the bus which is now with the DVLA. I am hoping to have a registration number in the next few weeks so the bus will be ready to go for the new owner without the hassle of the registration process.

I bought a bus from Chris last year and the bodywork he'd out in on mine was all very well done, and he was a thoroughly nice chap and very honest about where extra work was needed. I would expect this bus to be the same. GLWS.
