Lost 4th gear.

Post by VioletVW » Sat Aug 11, 2018 12:35 pm

Just driven from Paris to Calais in third.... 8O. Coming back from Disney last night and a knocking started which turned into a grinding. I'm assuming that something severe has occurred to 4th gear but I can drive in the other 3 gears. Hopefully we'll make it home from Dover but it is on occasion now also jumping out of third and first.

Are there any good gearbox repair companies out there that anyone can vouch for?

It's has an AS41 case and is a AH box.

Thanks

Keri..

Good luck - Bears I think are the best. Might cost you £800 for a fully rebuilt gearbox, but you will have peace of mind.

Ah ok, that name has been rattling around my head today. Will have a nose further when I get home. Thanks.

Unusual to lose various gears in one trip. Check the couplings and gearbox mounts before assuming the gearbox has failed.
Supplying quality in house designed items plus parts from SCAT, Kennedy Clutches, CB Performance & FIRETEC. Also fitting service including modifications & mechanical upgrades.

I will when I get home. The knocking/grinding started when cruising along the motorway so in gear. All gears engage correctly although there is some knocking when in the other three gears. Maybe it isn't quite as terminal as I thought then...

I'll see if I can find a how too for couplings and mounts... Thanks for the advice Jim.

Could be cv joint related - AH = IRS ?

Maybe you have a loose cv joint bolt or dodgy bearings.

It's a bus boys swing axle. Have arrived home after a long drive. 440 miles in third gear is painful. Luckily it's a long ratio box so managed 50 mph at a noisy 3500 rpm.

Id the rain stops this week I'll try and get underneath to see what's what. Hopefully it will be a straightforward fix.

Is there a simple way to check if the gearbox mounts are perished without dropping the engine and box?
