Rust treatment - Future welding?

Post by MrCheezy » Mon Jun 11, 2018 6:55 am

The underneath of my splitty has the usual surface rust and had a few welding repairs over the years. I want to stop it getting worse until I take it off the road to strip it down and have the welding sorted properly. I try and avoid the rain and it’s stored in a garage but want to take it to Cornwall etc for a week in Jul when it will probably be raining!!

The simplest solution would be to waxoil the underneath but I don’t want to make welding more difficult trying to clean it off etc.

Would a rust converter (dinatrol etc) cause issues with future welding or is there a paint treatment that is easy to remove or comparable with welding?

Any advice welcome to try and stop it fizzing and crumbling to dust!!

How about some white vinegar, that's what I've been using on some parts...
Turns the rust black... Put it on for 5-10 minutes and then wash off.
