May 20th 2018 MOT n VHI

Post by type21f » Sun May 13, 2018 8:11 am

For discussion.

I am not quoting exactly because there are lots of copies of the "official" words out there...

So on this day.. declaration of Vehicle of Historic Interest commences in theory for vehicles over 40 years old to exempt from MOT.
To qualify for exemption from having to have the vehicle MOT'd
You can make the declaration on the form V112.
It was category 'o' ?
The form has not yet been modified..YET.
Comments read.. fill form in and submit when you retax the vehicle.
This will cover vehicles which were MOT'd at last taxation point.. but as most will get an MOT then tax.. what about the gap?
Mine is Taxed for a year starting 1st of April.. when it had an MOT but now MOT status is no valid MOT.
I want to test the system.

When the form is altered and available on line electronically, I will print off a copy, complete and then what?
Hand it into post office or send to DVLA? or just keep it with the vehicle till next tax year.
I will be interested in what the DVLA 'vehicle information' enquiry shows for my van on May 21st?
Thoughts?
Be interesting to be stopped for not having a valid MOT or not declaring on the form and it being accepted!

The form will be interesting to read and complete for a start!
Comments?

I'm guessing but I imagine there will be two states your van can be in legally.... Valid MOT or declared as exempt and accepted by DVLA as such. Does it say anywhere that the MOT must cover until the exemption process is completed?

It does not seem to...
I will post a link...
Half way down link to .pdf..

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/mot- ... 0-may-2018

On page 4..

I will download the V112 form fill it in and then visit my local post office to confuse him..
If he does not know, I will post it off to the DVLA and watch what the vehicle information shows..

I think you'll go to the post office and hand in your v5 then change taxation class to vhi.then the need for mot is removed from taxation process.i did similar last week when we changed my wife's car from disabled back to normal as she's using disabled free tax on her other car.
My herald ran out of mot in January but is taxed until August ( like a saddo I retaxed it just before the post office closed on the last day of paper tax discs...) I think so I'm thinking sorn online and then trip to post office to vhi then retax.maybe it's not required to be untaxed to declare vhi tho ive not seen anything to the contrary?

I was under the impression that when you re-tax online from the 20th May there will be a tick box to declare 'no substantial mods' therefore this is your V112 declaration.
If you tick the box - no MOT - if you don't tick the box electronic MOT record required.

However I was also told by my MOT man a couple of weeks ago that once you declare MOT Exempt it is always MOT exempt - if you want to take it back in say every 3 years for MOT check - you can't - you have to 'un-declare' have an MOT and then 're-declare' - which seems odd!

I don't think anyone really knows whats going on until the 20th - and even then i'm not sure if we will be any the wiser for a while..... hahahaha

In fairness the DVLA seem to moving away from paper rapidly - so would be very surprised if you have to physically fill in a paper V112 form and take to a post office!

NB. My Van is registered already a VHI (Vehicle of Historic Interest) - I was under the impression that if your Road Tax is free - as they all are now - it is already classified as a VHI by DVLA.

My thinking was that I could get it MOT'd if I want.. say every three years! But we'll see!..
If it is VHI, the MOT status should be interesting to see on the DVLA Vehicle information site....
I just wan to see that mine does not say No valid MOT...but it might say that with VHI?

I always say an MOT is only a picture at a point in time..
hopefully it means the vehicle is roadworthy..
But how will that be challenged?
I know in an accident it may be dissected but if it had an MOT that could be 10 minutes later..
:)

If want to get an mot it's fine .you would need one to transfer a cherished plate on or off for instance.
Don't go expecting to carry on driving tho if it fails as once the box is open......obviously none of us would but just saying:)
Currently post 1960 vehicles are "historic "class for dvla vhi is a new thing I think

I live very close to Great Escape Cars who hire out classic cars and supply all the classics for those antique hunting programs that seem to be on everyday. They will be offering a 'safety check' for £50. Not much more than an MOT but without the legal implications of declaring/not declaring as outlined above. I suppose you could declare as exempt then get someone similar to check every so often when you fancy getting it on a ramp. I'm sure other companies will start offering a similar service.

Post office Manager did not know but will enquire.
Proferred old V112 which I expect to change so you can declare no substantial modifications.
Brings to mind if this will settle seat belt rules n washers with safari debates too

I had an email today with a link to the gov website:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/mot- ... 0-may-2018

A mention in section 5 about 'Substantial Changes'.

Worth a read - may affect some VW'ers.
I don't like injustice!

Well at least summat is cleared up in my head.you don't have to declare vhi you can just drive without mot after the cars 40th birthday.shame it's not the same for tax.how daft is that? My triumph spitfire was 40 in April but I can't claim tax exemption till January .utter madness .still at least it's under 1500 so cheaper.

Hi
My wife has just renewed my historic car tax for my 54 oval as usual & she said it didn't ask here any questions related to modifications, etc, which I thought was strange in view of the new changes. Has anyone else renewed without problem recently
Thanks Dave
