Faulty Ignition Barrel on 67

Post by jenkinso » Sun Apr 01, 2018 7:18 am

Occasionally when I turn the ignition key to operate the starter, nothing happens. Repeating a few times makes the connection. It's deffo not the starter motor and I'm pretty sure it's something within the ignition switch that's failing to connect, and its getting worse.

Does anyone know if the ignition switch can be pulled apart and repaired?

Almost certainly dodgy contacts in the switch - usually as a result of years of two small contact surface areas having to pass a voltage load. The symptoms you describe are also not unusual for old cable connections, crusty wiring, and the fact that the ignition switch is fed via about 20 miles of cable from the battery. A new ignition switch is available at about £30, and you can also fit a "hot start" relay to reduce the load on the ignition switch contacts.

Thanks for your reply, and apologies for not responding sooner. All good info :)

Unfortunately I can't get a replacement switch that will work with my existing key as C&C tell me it's a one-year-only switch on the 67 which uses a specific key blank. Apparently nobody repro's the 67 barrel :(

So I'm either needing to try repair mine, changing all the locks to use a different key that matches the £30 replacement barrel, or accepting that the ignition will use a separate key.

So ... anyone know if it's possible to pull my barrel apart to try repair the contacts?

May not be the cheapest option but hunt on thesamba.com for a seller called vwgab.
Gabriel is an acclaimed lock n key seller. If it can be repaired overhauled checked out he will know how...
If you want a 67 replacement he may have.. then all you will have to do is rediffer all the other locks.

He may be able to refresh a 67 ignition lock to match your code.
Worth a chat with him for options.

C&C also havs a lock guru..
Robin!

Also knowledgeable and helpful..
I learned my solutions from them.

I was asking Dougal!
65 is T code profile.
67 is L code profile. No one in the UK seems to have any ignition stocks of NOS items.
I understand early ignition locks can be stripped and rebuilt.
Apparently 67 not so easy.... may be possible. I have played with Metro Audi VW and Split locks..
I have redifferred around 30 barrells myself to match (successfully)... and stripped parts out of a lot more as replacement parts. Some However.... I am still trying to persuade apart!
Winter night fun..

A few to match a replacement ignition.
I have a few 67 handles and no ignition..
You could of course replace all the L code 67 items with 65 items.
I have no personal experience of dealing with Desi.
I do however have experience of Gabriel and Robin... and they are both nice guys.

Specifically about ignition locks. Yes Desi refurbishes handles, chrome plates the Mazac castings and refreshes/ rebuilds the handle locks but I am not aware of him doing ignition locks.. was looking to hear if he did?

I haven't dealt with Desi myself but know a few people who have. Was trying to meet him at Stanford Hall but failed.
He seems to have everything in regards to locks.
I myself got an 67 ignition lock from the states years ago and re-keyed it to my existing key. Was not a problem.

Cheers,
Gertjan
