Let’s try and move on.

Cab doors. These are the last piece of the puzzle. The last bit of metal work. Mostly because Jeff had put them off as long as he could. He hates cab door  and mine were some of the worst he had ever seen.

The passenger door wasn’t even the original Barndoor one. I think the bus had been in a knock at some point as the remanants of front chassis rails had also been repaired. Maybe this was when the bus was repainted. Fortunately over the OG. But the passenger door had been on the bus for a very long time and was part of it history. It was also a nice matching patina having spent so long sat in the forest. So I eventually managed to convince Jeff to save the knackered late door. Another knackered, but not as much, similar year SWR door was found and donated its inner frame. Then the passenger door skin was transfered. And the incorrect handle recess was corrected.
Oh and you might also spot my twisted piano door tops I straighted a tad a while back have now been restored by Mark Spicer 8)

Then the drivers door. This was BAD!! But original. So again the SWR latter inner was repaired and the knackered OG outer skin was refitted. I am so stoked with the results! :D both doors look ace. Definitely worth the effort. The bus looks suddenly loads more complete.
And check out those door gaps 8)

Looking ace! That last photo, the before and after of the front door, really shows the progress and retained history. Job well done!

Time for an update.
Some major mods have been going on.
One period correct, the other not period correct.
But as I was writing this it occurred to me that the one that some people may have a problem with was actually the period correct one, and the period incorrect one no one would probably bat an eyelid at. :P
So let's start with the incorrect one shall we? Front safaris.
I can't actually find any evidence that front safaris have ever been fitted to a pre-53 barndoor. In fact if the famous Africa Kombi 'Charlotte' pictured below doesn't have them then I'm pretty certain they weren't available as it has every other air-con option possible.

Image

Also the A-pillars are a different shape and just not conducive with mounting safaris. It's a proper hack job to weld them in. But they are just too cool to not have. Pictures of the safaris fitting to follow shortly.
EDIT: The bus below with the vertical wing mirror appears to be a Dec 52.

And this factory Barndoor fitting instruction image appears to show 52 piano hinge quarter lights and possibly the early style A-pillar.

Such attention to detail...
is what makes this project so interesting!
Love the research findings...
My interest in early Devon Conversions has never fully answered the identity of which was the first vehicle converted.
The earliest brochure shows a barndoor conversion..

Close examination of the earlist three Devon brochures from 1956/7 now says I am mistaken..
Maybe not a barndoor after all.
More likely an early peaked clip.

The earlist Interior I know of that was fitted to a 1951 Danish Barndoor was made by POBA.
There are pictures in David Eccles book of Camper interiors.
Will seek a picture to post.
