1967 RHD Devon Torvette Walk Through

Post by Snowdonia CC » Wed Jul 04, 2018 9:39 am

Back in the mid 2000’s my wife and I were very proud owners of a 1965 11 window walk through with a Dormobile roof we named Lucy. We used the van for day trips and holidays abroad. However, with a growing family we decided to sell her and buy a caravan which we had for nearly ten years and thoroughly enjoyed. We were very sad to see our splitty go and vowed that one day we would get another one.

Move on 10 years or so, after a redundancy and early retirement, we have set up a classic camper van rental business in Snowdonia North Wales, www.snowdoniaclassiccampers.co.uk which is in its early days and going well. We have an early bay which is in mid restoration and 3 late bays that are currently being rented out.

As well as the four bay window campers we have purchased a 1967 UK right hand drive Devon Torvette walk through split screen in need of a full restoration. I am intending to start on the bus this the autumn but as it has just passed an MOT, we are going to drive it around and enjoy it until then.

The long term plan is to rent it out mainly for weddings but also the odd holiday. Below are some pictures as we purchased it.

We purchased this bus as we wanted a walk through, it had to be a UK right hand drive and although it has rusted in all the usual places below the bottom 6 inches or so, the rest of it is in good condition and is very original with a near complete interior and I am fairly sure it has it's original engine and gearbox. The front doors, gutters and window surrounds are all in great shape. It also drives really well, although the gear linkage could do with a bit of tlc.

The data plate indicates that it was originally pearl white and manufactured on the 7th December 1966.

My first job is to replace the rear bumper which came with it, add an appropriate exhaust and put a bit of pastel white paint on the front panel as well as give the whole bus a good glean and polish.

I will add some more images of the underneath, engine and interior soon.

I have a contact/ friend with a 1966 Velvet Green Torvette Walk Through for any detailed interior photos for you if you require...
I can also recommend Kevin Jackson to make any missing pieces or refurbish any pieces you require. His work is outstanding and SSVC award winning!

Sorry slight thread Hijack - Graham (type21f)- why are some Devon awning rails much longer than others?
The rail on this 66 Torvette is significantly longer than my own 67 Devon Caravette rail.

Yes that is a Devon Car Tent rail.
82" is a standard awning rail.
Longer ones = the original buyer opted to purchase the Devon tent...
as an alternative to the Awning.

Do you have cooker unit?
I would have expected it to be on rear of passenger seat?
I see you have Devon only supplied vinyl interior panels...this was a Pearl white kombi to which Devon may have added the lower colour as part of the comversion. Option to add on price list.
Do you have Devon supplied diamond pattererned headlining?

Or is your cooker on the NS rear short panel..

Unfortunately we do not have the cooker that sits behind the passenger seat - we are on the hunt for one so if anyone knows of one, please let us know. Below are a couple of shots of the headlining. Also the original paint is still under the lower brown colour and it is pearl white, so it seems likely it was pearl white all over.

Decided to go to Camper Jam, had a great day and ended up parking next to a really great looking bus that had been beautifully restored, and even though I had put the rear bumper back on with a suitable exhaust and some white paint on the front to tidy it all up, our bus still looked like a badgers arm pit in comparison!
