Maybe only for the brave but here is a VERY interesting read..

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewt ... ?p=4177062

this includes 6v to 12v .. and on you tube there is "a how to convert them easily to flashing lights" using an LED version of a 6v festoon bulb.
Enjoy!

The last few days I’ve been researching the number plate, I’ve ordered the book G suggested and emailed the three local councils to see if they have any information. It appears that a guy in Nottingham has the HX records from 1930-1933 so I’ll write to him to see if he’s got any further info.

I’ve also emailed the local VW garage to see if they were going in the 60s, but if anyone from High Wycombe area knows any garages that have been around for ages or local historians please get in touch.

I’m not giving up on the plate so welcome suggestions.

Got home fairly early tonight so pulled the SC out the garage to carry on the strip down, I’ve had the nod from Dave Haywood that I can get it over to him so I need to get on with it.

First thing finish dropping the engine, the bolt over the starter motor wasn’t the D type on later buses so I needed two pairs of hands, Lisa stepped up and helped me out and once I’d cut the choke cable it was out.

Gave the pedestal a clean and unearthed the number, now just to see if this is the original engine, anyone got any idea?

Also found what I believe is an early hookup prototype

I hoovered out the engine bay and around the engine and found a couple of visitors, might try carbon dating to see if they’re as old as the SC.

I then attacked the treasure chest area, removing the door which will need a fair bit of work, I then hoovered out the rust (see my for sale thread :D ) and found a church key behind the really solid panels that separate the fuel tank area.

Here’s a few pics, don’t think they need much explanation.

Some really solid areas and some not so, that’s the story so far.

A bit more stripping, pedals, master cylinder, brake pipes etc etc then it’ll be ready to get it over to Dave, maybe as early as next week :bounce:

So my digging found the following

AB 1234
1 OR 2 LETTER PLATES
ONE OR TWO LETTERS FOLLOWED BY ONE TO FOUR NUMBERS OR REVERSE
These plates are rare and are normally only seen on newer vehicles as cherished or personalised numbers. However, some still exist and were originally issued to vehicles first registered between 1903 and the mid 1930's. The reverse (where the one or two letters follow the numbers) are very rare - only a few of these were issued in the 1950's / 60's when three letter plate combinations ran out. The one or two letters, in the above example AB, make up the 'area identifier' and indicate where the vehicle was first registered.
Area identifiers for vehicles first registered from 1 September 2001 are different to those used with this system. If the plate is reversed, e.g. 1234AB, the two letters (AB) are still the area identifier.
The numbers, in the above example 1234 are the individual element which give the vehicle it's unique identity. The numbers are
issued in sequence from 1 to 9999. Not all possible combinations of these plates were issued - and many have since been sold on as cherished numbers.
Although this series of plates has long since ceased being issued to new vehicles, it is still in use for re-registrations for pre-1931 ('vintage') vehicles which need new plates. The current series being used for re-registrations is SV8000 - SV9999 which was never originally issued.

HX - London Central to "P" prefix (Middlesex to 1965, Greater London 1965 –
Also confirmed here http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/h.htm
https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things- ... ecords.pdf
“Middlesex County Council
Vehicle registration was dealt with by the Local Taxation Department (reporting to the General Purposes Committee). Surviving records are in the series MCC/LT/VE. A variety of index marks was used, including ‘H’, ‘MC’, ‘MD’, ‘MX’, ‘ME’ (1922) and ‘MF’ (1923).
Only one register of vehicle registration survives (ref MCC/LT/VE/1). This is for the period 1916-1919 and covered the areas of Edgware, Kingsbury, Little Stanmore, Great Stanmore, Finchley, Hendon, Wembley and Willesden. The format of the register is that of a register of car owners rather than of index numbers. These index numbers are highly varied and of no set pattern.”
High Wycombe is in Buckinghamshire

...another thought.. is there another VW on any registers with a HX registration plate to attempt to establish if the owner has any garage references etc.. supplied by..XYZ VW dealer..

it is an SC so unusual I would have thought..
I did have a source to a list of VW main dealers from 196* somewhere. Will look.
VW GB did issue a lit of main agents with the service info when you bought the vehicle.

I did manage to get period photos of Croalls the Edinburgh VW garage which supplied my 1964 from a photographic archive...
I even then managed to tie my 64 as being sold by them! but I did have a V5c!
My 62 was on a green log book and a buff log book which DVLA accepted and they reissued the regidtration but still tied to the vehicle and not to be transferred...not that I want to!

I've already tried that website with farmer, pickup, VW, Splitscreen etc etc, didn't try garage so will get on with it now!

I had a reply from Middlesex archives to say HX wasn't one of theirs and to try Eastham, I have emailed City of London & Bucks Archives but no responses.

Thanks for the info, keep searching!

As you are the current keeper, can you not request the previous registered keepers and pay the appropriate fee to the DVLA. Or is all data lost due to the age off the road ?

James

Great looking SC btw, can't wait to see it done.

The SC isn’t “on the system” the last owner drove it in the late 60s before parking it up in his barn when the clutch went. The barn was then sold on, so no paperwork or keys unfortunately.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Strange two places say HX was Middlesex county then central London..

HX - London Central to "P" prefix (Middlesex to 1965, Greater London 1965 –

Thanks G, with both of us searching I hope we can find an answer.

I now know the location of the barn it was dragged from and have the owners name and address, sadly the owner at the time of the rescue sold the house and barn in 2015, so i will write and ask for a forwarding address.

I have also attempted to harness the power of Facebook and signed up to a few High Wycombe FB groups, lets see what that brings!
