6 volt starter and 1600cc engine

Post by john clark » Mon Jan 14, 2013 1:10 pm

My 1964 was originally 1200cc. It's 30 years since I uprated to a 1500cc and then 20 since I first fitted a 1600cc. Are all 6 volt starters the same ? It's got the original gear box type. (VW Heritage show only one 6 volt starter up to 1966.) Thanks.

Hi John,
If you are still operating at 6 volts then it should be straight forward - ie all the same. If you are running 12 volt there were several options when you had your engine changed ie may have changed to 12v starter and flywheel, may have just kept the 6 volt starter and flywheel (ran mine like this for 20 years) or may have had a special 12v starter running with 6 volt flywheel (which is how I run mine now).

Steve.

Thanks Steve. It's still on 6 volts so that looks as though the VW Heritage one is ok.

The current one us fine, but we are thinking of driving to Odessa in the summer and after breaking down in Denmark (dynamo) and later in Sweden (sudden end float) we are a bit cautious !

There is one for sale in the "VW stuff for sale" bit of this forum at the moment. £60. I cant vouch for it's condition though. Unashamed plug for Peter Good. www.volksgoods.co.uk He has helped me out many times over the years - he is the electrical guru! I see he is advertising new ones for £55 on his site.
