I tried to make my own before I bought one from Peter, the Maplin one is the same as he uses. The only trouble I had was that you've almost got to keep it/solder it in sterile conditions! or any static in the slightest will render it usless, I made 3 or 4 and when I ran a test meter through them it kept showing 12v. Got one from Peter, it showed 6v and worked!!

Sorry VW Buzzers; that link is not really the most helpfull or technically accurate I regret to say - in my opinion of course.
I have a range of technical guide on converting from 6 to 12 volt systems giving far more practical options, including changing generators. Please email me if antone wants a copy. peter@volksgoods.fsnet.co.uk Peter Good

sorry about that peter your dead right i was on my way out and did a quick post. I have done a couple of conversions but defo put my hands up to the king of electrics. Don't suppose you have a decent size diagram of how to wire in my footswitch i only have a wire running to each headlight/ no main or side lights and my eyesight doesn't seem to work on the small pics. Thanks for all the good comments guys - much appreciated.
It is quite true to say there is a lot of really useful stuff for VW owners on the web and through the forums like this one.
Unfortunately, and with no doubt the best of intentions, some technical write-ups do fall a little short, and I think it right to point this out on the fairly rare occassions when it happens.
Enough of my rambling! Haven't got a diagram, but will knock one up and email it to you... Peter G
