Crankshaft pulley size 170mm or 178mm?

Post by Sjtw » Mon Sep 03, 2018 7:08 am

I need to replace my bottom pulley and I was searching for an original vw one and discovered them labelled as 170mm.
Mine is approximately 178mm.
So I was wondering which to get?
Worth noting that most sites don’t specify the diameter!
My engine is a 1641 with twin dels.
Anyone have any idea if I should try and replace with the same size or drop to 170mm? Which I guess would make the fan turn slower.
What size do you all have?
(Don’t be shy) :)

I have a big one - it’s stamped with a D.

Bigger crank pulley spins the fan quicker resulting in better cooling.

Aftermarket pulleys are bobbins, they’re shiny etc but most don’t have the oil screw thread which stops oil leaking out of the crankshaft seal and getting chucked around the engine.

Yep, the larger pulley will turn the fan faster to help move more air over the B+P's / heads.

Thanks guys. Any ideas where to get the D fan from. All the usual websites are crap at stating sizes. The only place I can find one is jBugs in the USA :(

Bay of E - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-VW-A ... Swz35bBnlK

Others probably available as well as that one.
