red 9 front brakes

Post by wizard 1066 » Wed Jun 27, 2018 9:36 pm

Just bought a red 9 front end, almost all the bolts are siezed up, the wheel bearings are shot and all the ball joints are gone.

It came with the vented discs as on their big brake kit, the calipers didn't come with the front end.

I am running 15" wheels so clearance should'nt be a problem, just wondering before I start looking for parts what other folks are using, I was told about 944 calipers.

Stock late bay brakes are on the bus at the moment with a 112x5 stud pattern and I have been told we could use these, they say all the red 9 parts come from the vw parts bin, anyone know what parts come from where.

Couple of months old then..... Lol

Bearings should have their numbers on the edge, so just buy like for like.

No Jim new to me, bought off another owner that must have had it laying around for a while, everything has gone that could go, bearing numbers rusted away, but I will be able to get them sized up locally, been looking for 944 calipers hoping they will simply bolt onto the stock fittings and work with the vented discs, otherwise we will be sorting stock bay disc set up, thats if they fit the spindles.

Has anyone fitted Porsche boxter calipers to the red 9 front end, or any other uprated caliper set up, already got the vented disc's and some mountings that came with the kit.

I was told it wasn’t possible to fit 944 or Porsche Boxster front brakes. I think it is possible if you get a bay window conversion kit (which vdub engineering can probably do you) that will fit on. The other problem might be track width though going that way - not too sure about whether it’ll make it too wide at the front

I’m currently doing this now with our Red9 setup but am going he Hi-Spec Caliper (Boxster S Fitment) route and lanner for a suitable bracket.

Boxster S calipers are possible via Lanner at VDub Engineering.

You will need a 944T hub and disc 1986+ I believe and lanner’s Boxster S bracket which fits late bay spindles

Hope this helps 👍

Track width shouldn’t be an issue, we’re runnjng 944T hubs and discs and have 17” x 7” et 52 Porsche 911 wheels and don’t have clearance problems 😊

We managed to get a set of front 944 calipers, they look to have the same mounting points and the bolt spacing is the same, once we have the disc mounted with new bearings we will have a better idea on if or how to mount them.
Just had the entire front assembly apart and painted along with blasted and powdercoated including the springs, looks nice now.
Also got new ball joints and steering rack to get all the parts ready for assembly.

Just got most of the parts for assembly now, looks like I will have to make a spacer for the disc mount, as once the calipers are bolted to the stub axle the caliper isnt central to the disc, will have to do some head scratching to sort this out.
