Removing starter motor 65 rhd bus

Post by Kingston44 » Wed Dec 05, 2018 6:39 pm

Hi. My name is Nicky. I purchased a 65 splitty in June this year. It’s a rhd walkthrough subaru powered fellows conversion. Unfortunately I think I’ve either burnt out the starter or the solenoid . Long story so won’t bore with the details. I’ve looked at the starter but the top bolt looks very hard to get a spanner on or a socket. Especially as I got water pipes coming out of the engine which is directly in the way. The clearance is not good. Would anyone be able to give me some advice. Would I be able to remove the solenoid whilst the starter is in situ and test it? Can it be removed from the starter. Could anybody recommend a trusted mechanic. I live in Bexleyheath Kent. Feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is it a VW gearbox and starter motor?

Hi dougie.
Yes I believe so. It’s an irs 4 speed freeway flyer

You'll need to pull the starter complete. Though I can't advise on what Scubbie stuff is in the way.

The stock VW fixing would be a stud and nut on the bottom which is easier to get to once you have the wheel off, the top bolt has a nut cunningly hidden behind the fan housing inside the engine bay. I wouldn't know if there are Subaru bits in the way, but if you can imagine roughly where it should be from the position of the starter motor you should be able to find it fairly easily. A 17mm spanner will get the nut off, the bolt will be drawn out with the starter.

Hi dougie. I managed to get the starter off today. Looked on YouTube on how to check if it works. Tried but no luck. Took it to a starter/alternator shop. The guy tried it said both starter and solenoid are shot. Is that usual?? He told me that it should be a 6 volt starter but someone has converted it to 12 volt. I know early model vehicles were 6 volt and later models were 12 volts. Basically he said it’s been bespoke made. His boss is going to take a look and call me tomorrow. Would you or anyone be able to shed some light on this. I can’t help being a bit dubious. Regards Nicky. it’s an irs conversion so I know it’s not original!!

The 12v starters and 6v starters have a different size bush and gear. I can't imagine the scooby engine has a 6v style flywheel, but maybe the Fellows engine conversion involves a hybrid starter of some sort. Best speak to them, and find out.

As Jim says it would be best to check with Perry at Fellowes Speed Shop, but I'd be surprised if it's anything other than a standard 12v starter which you can buy off the shelf complete with a new solenoid from any of the usual suppliers.
