Information regarding sundial campers.

Post by Robgrav » Fri Apr 05, 2019 1:36 pm

Does anyone have info regarding sundial campers? I’m trying to find out weather ours is a genuine sundial or not. Are there any specific things that were sundial specific on the dash or anywhere. My bus has no original interior but I’ve recently found photos online from 10 years ago where the bus had different windows fitted. I also have sundial badges on the dog leg. Cigarette lighter and red light in the dash. Are these specific. Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I love the Sundial campers story, so with apologies to those who know a more accurate version, this is how I remember it.
When splits were new and being sold through the dealer network the demand for windowed vans was much greater than that for panel vans. For reasons known only to themselves, VW made all the dealer's take a quota of panel vans . Sundial were an independent American company that went from dealership to dealership converting the panel vans to campers on each dealer's own premises. They made the furniture in their own factory and at their height employed about 90 workers. And those Dragons Den people think they're clever....

When planning production capacity the Factory is balanced to the supply of sub assemblies. So VW planned to make more panel vans and single cabs than deluxe models. However the popularity of Westy camper models and Sambas meant that to meet VW requirements for every deluxe the dealers requested they were obliged to take so many panel vans kombis etc.
The demand for campers allowed a niche for home spun converters to sell a serviceable camper conversion at a lower price point.
Hence all the myriad of converters..
A lot, starting with EZ were made by offshoots of the same family either due to opportunity or family conflict!
