SO42 - bits wanted

Post by Hinchy » Tue Dec 18, 2018 12:39 am

Og parts Wanted-
Walk through mat
Tailgate dead bolt
Curtain bungee P clip - got one, but need another
Trim for cargo door - the molding that goes on the edge around the lock mechanism. Apparently some were spot welded and others were screwed on - not sure if this was just a Westy part?

Cheers!

My vote is Westy part..

I believe this was due to a VW build variation. Kombis had no welded plate because VW did not fit interior panels BUT microbus did have the welded plate. I observed this when looking with Ted Thomas at the difference between our 64/ 66 microbus based Devon interiors (with VW interior panels) which had welded edges to cargo door around the lock mechanism and a 66 kombi based Devon Torvette Spaceway bus (with Devon made panels) which had no welded closing plate.
This had Devon fitted interior panels and a simple hammered alloy plate formed and screwed across the gap.
So I believe that if the Westfalia Bus was based on a kombi specification body, in order for Westfalia to fit their own interior panels, they would have made and fitted their own closing plate. No idea what it looks like but westy made!

Well I have seen these plates, a van I restored years ago had one, I have seen them at shows in junk boxes but to the untrained eye you'd walk past it as it's a Michal Caine part.....................not a lot of people know that!

Mail me a pic of your bungee clip, I think I have one or two...

Rocket.........but you knew that anyway....

I work on the basis that ....as vwed said "the parts are out there, somewhere!".. either original and used or very similar if not exact sourced parts..
So keep looking...
I have hunted for ages for similar elusive Devon parts fixings etc. and for example just found some Devon made parts oneBay after eight years..
As Ron says a lot of my discoveries have been at non VW related Autojumbles or real oldy worldy hardware shops...
Good hunting..especially keep looking on thesamba.com or eBay.de.. for Westy parts or a reputable breaker like Graham Clarke at fbi...
But you knew that anyway...

Ron has come up trumps a few times for hard to find westy gems. I do love the hunt though and go to lots of swapmeets/auto jumbles both here and Europe, searching the internet constantly. And the feeling when you eventually find “that part” is what it’s all about, you know the feeling I’m sure. Its one of the most enjoyable aspects of owning a bus for me, plus I get to meet some great people along the way. It wouldn’t be fun if it was easy:)

Ron came up trumps for me when he sold me my Devonette table!
He did not know what he had...knew he got it with some general Devon stuff.. thought it was Devon or maybe Westy..
Sold it to me with the provision that I told him when I collected it.
I am sad.. both my son's used to take the P out of me asking what I was doing exciting that evening... "Sorting you screws?"
However my assorted hoarding has come up trumps.. several times!
I will look through to see if I have a similar slide bolt..
I assume it is brass from the yellow tinge..
I have stripped and reused fittings from around eight houses ranging from Victorian era to fifties/ early sixties..
Definitely have a few.. but I suspect longer..
