Canterbury Pitt table - first repro almost done :)

Post by e m p i » Thu Aug 14, 2014 10:44 am

Just kicking an idea around really......
I know that finding an original Canterbury Pitt table is nigh on impossible and that there are quite a few people out there who are missing the table. I could possibly get a batch made which would be the same as the original by dismantling mine and letting the joiner use it as a template. They would be topped off with the same pattern Formica as mine or as near as I could get it. Supplied either un-stained so you can match it to your interior or stained, like mine, in deep mahogany. I could also supply the piece which screws to the long side which the table clips on to. I believe I can supply it with the correct hinges and also the odd style dead bolts which attach it to the van. The sides of the legs would be curved as per the original and it would also be free-standing if required like the original. So far the only part which I can't seem to find would be the spring loaded stay which keeps the legs in the down position but I would find another type of stay to do so so the leg(s) would still stay down once in position. They would NOT come with the 4 short legs which some Pitt tables had for added support when in the bed mode as mine doesn't and has never had these but I believe they are available to buy as Devon short legs and cups if you wish to add these yourself. I am aware that the tables came in a few different lengths depending on what else you had in the van ie mine has a magazine rack which folds down and makes a portion of the bed but some didn't have this therefore their tables will be longer than mine. Given this each one would be made to the length you request.
At present I don't have an exact price but as a ball park I should think somewhere around the £220-£250 mark for each table and it will be as near as you can get to looking lie an OG table. Just gauging interest at the moment to see if it's viable.

Cheers, Lee.

Aloha Jobug,
Yeah they're a rare thing to find for sale. If I can get 5 people that want one it should be feasible. Hopefully a few more folk will be interested.
Cheers, Lee.

Hi Lee

I was thinking of making one from my old kitchen table when I was a kid. Do you know the measurements and where exactly they fit in the bus.

Cheers, Morts from Oz

There are a couple of different sizes depending on if you have the magazine rack or not. Let me know and I will get you the measurements but basically when it's in the bed position the edges should be in line with the end of the shortest bench seat ie the rear facing one and then it has a gently curve. By where does it fit do you mean for storage or how high when set up as a table?

Cheers, Lee.

Where do they go for storage? Mine is the big one and I just lay it on the drawers in the rear hatch, but not ideal

Yeah that's where I put mine if I have to tuck it away. Generally though mine is either set up as the table or set down as the bed. Rather handily though mine had a magazine rack so my table is slightly shorted but I can fold the mag rack up to give a bit more space when the table is up, if that makes sense.

We now have a prototype table practically finished. Is anyone still looking for a table? It will have the correct style and length of spring loaded brackets underneath that hold the legs in the "down" position.

Hi Lee,

Just spotted your update and as I've yet to find a source, I wondered if you might be able to steer me in the direction of the correct length, leg support spring bracket supplier or might be able to supply me with one. I'm currently checking out one more UK supplier but so far the only longer ones available appear to be from the USA though I'm not sure if they're quite correct either.

Kind regards,
Peter

Hi Barry,
It all got shelved in end as I couldn't find a supplier for the correct pattern Formica. I actually bought a kitchen table off ebay that I was going to cut up just for the top but it turned out when I picked it up to be slightly the wrong colour plus to be honest it was too nice for me to butcher  just couldn't bring myself to do it
I might have another dip in the water and see if I can maybe get one made up and see how it goes from there.
Watch this space ;)

Cheers, Lee.

Well after forgetting all about it, here's one we made earlier  As in earlier this week. It still needs the laminate but other than that it's all done. Hardwood legs and edge supports, ply top and correct leg brackets, just like the originals. Only thing is that the leg brackets are black rather than brass finish but when placed next to my og table I think it looks pretty spot on.

See next page for pictures

I have more pictures but photobucket is being an arseh0le and every time I try to get the links just keeps popping up with random adverts for sh!t that is of no interest  It does that quite a bit when I'm on my mobile for some reason. Gets right on my t1ts.
I'll post them up when I have access to the iPad.
Cheers, Lee.
