1962 Devonette article in SSVC mag

Post by type21f » Fri Jun 22, 2012 5:52 pm

Did anyone see my article in the SSVC magazine asking for info or photos of the interior of a 1962 Devonette?

Have a guess how many vans have surfaced so far?

Does anyone have even the faintest, merest, tiniest shred of info?

I have since bought a copy of an April 1964 "Which" Car Supplement on Motor Caravans which included the Devonette (bottom right plus flash!)....with lots of data but no photo of the interior.

I found a copy of "The Camper" but only advertisement pictures for the Caravanette...no Devonette.
It was shown at the October 1961 Earls Court Motor show but no pictures...

Someone must have pictures...

Please?

Thanks for the reply!
 No '62s...so far

I have shared a scan of the 1963 Devonette brochure with a later 1963 Devonette owner and shared links to my pictures of the three Devonettes that I know about. All of these are the later model with Dinette seat layout.
The front cupboard and seat are all the same...

This one has an aftermarket Gentlux roof.. I have one of these GL pop tops on my 64 Caravette..

Sadly I am looking for the earlier model with side seat and tall square front cupboard.

But I am still hopeful!

Just when I thought I'd uploaded all my relevant info on the early Devons i found this which may be of interest...?

It's a Devon Caravette brochure but with a Devonette supplement and judging by the indicators on the front might just qualify as a tiniest shred of info for the vintage you were after...

You just wish they'd taken more shots from inside the campers for their marketing purposes and our incessant curiosity...

Thanks Matt..😳😳😳😳
Yes it is relevant to my search for information about the start of the Devonette and the first vehicles made for the 1962 model year!

The Devonette was announced and displayed at the 1961 Earls Court Motor show...
I bought five publications about the Motor show to read and see what was in the press:

Official Motor show guide, Autocar, Motor, Daily Mail and Daily Express and found the documented release.
I have a flyer and two copies of this brochure released a matter months apart..

Yes I have that brochure and a very similar one which says "Made in Devon" above the picture!

The "Made in Devon" one came out first....and I surmised that maybe VW asked them to remove it!

As you say...if only they had taken some other pictures of the interior...

I have acquired some factory stills but these show the 1963 model
I still find it strange that there are no other obvious examples of Devonettes within our forum!

From the regular revisions to the price lists, Devon appear to have been making alterations to try to encourage sales...

It is nice that you have scanned the brochure too!

Also the interesting issue on the gentlux pop top shown as introduced in this brochure is that the size is quite different to the one we have that is fitted to my eldest son's 64 Caravette. I noticed this when I acquired this brochure and went off to check that it was not my imagination...
The size of this pop top is smaller than mine...so maybe my gentlux was fitted as an aftermarket item bought after initial sale exactly as I thought...
Mine is the same as the one shown in my Stanford Hall photo above....Mine is currently having the star crazing ground out of the gell coat prior to painting..

Thanks Graham

Well
Helped a forum poster recognise that they have a Devonette also...although sadly it has now got none of the original interior remaining but the owner does have details of the SSVC POs to quiz for photos...
Now has presented the dilemma for the owner to consider also seeking Devonette details or to follow the Caravette route...

This bus was built on the same day and has a VIN 72 vehicles later and is the same colour way and model...a Sealing Wax Red and Beige Grey Microbus.

So we'll see what we find out from the POs

It aslo had a full width rear seat and then this picture was taken which gave it away to the owner

Picture from under the floor showing the pole table pole mounting socket.....just like mine...
