Ah.....
You do not know me....that well!

I am a buyer not a seller!
That came with my 1965 Caravette....

I have been looking for one to go with the 1964 Caravette....
and reading and researching to find out when the poppers appeared on the crockery cupboard door on the cargo door to indicate when they were first fitted....
Not 62.... Maybe 63...but my vote is on 1964MY

For the Spaceway thread this would have been all red ..
I think...
I have seen half a one...
Anyone with a Spaceway... care to post a picture?

Thank you.

Are both ends of the 'stay' the same? And where do you store/stash it? I have never seen one in the flesh before, something that would easily get lost.

The close-ups of the flush mount bracket and 'stay' bracket on cargo door are excellent in your previous post, if possible could you post a photo of the little bracket just below the cargo door latch and the 'stay' bracket on the table/shelf. I would appreciate a photo of the bottom of table/shelf where it attaches to cargo door, just looking to confirm I have the correct piece?

Cheers
The strut pictured came with the van but I am 100% sure it is not correct as it is too long and looks nothing like the versions I have seen on other Spaceways, so discount that piece. When I get round to it, I will probably make a correct replacement from the correct gauge steel rod.
I will get a close up of the bracket on the underside of the table top as soon as I am able.
Thanks Spanker, the mystery of the illusive stay continues ...... I guess you could stash/store it in the 'nook and cranny' along with Graeme's tights!

Only seen a picture of one in the David Eccles book before until last year at SH when there was a Devon for sale with one...but it was in two pieces...
I have been tempted to get some tooling made to heat seal some up..
LOL

You probably would get away with dichloromethane to seal them, no need for a heat seal. Test a tiny piece and see how you get on. You paint on with a paint brush, looks and runs like water but effectively and gently welds two pieces of thermo plastic together.
If it works, which it probably will, you can send me a cutlery roll by way of thanks, which would be gratefully recieved ;)

Bit late joining but here's my table with strut and what I believe is half the cutlery pack with poppers on the back that match rear cupboard poppers

Great photos by the way spanker

Great Pics Al - the tank is awesome.

I have both types of shaving mirror. One has the ply back and alloy corner pieces, the other is all alloy. I know that the all alloy mirror is OG to our 67 and the wooden one came with the 66 interior (made in Oct 65) that I bought recently. When (if) I get some time I'll sort some drawings out and take some pics. Type21f and I think that both types of mirror were around in 1966 (not sure if that stroppy Nexus7 guy agrees though  )

Seth - How did you clean up the alloy sheeting? I use approx 5% caustic plus a bit of wallpaper paste and paint it on to the alloy. Scrub with an old toothbrush, leave for around 30 minutes, rinse off with spirit vinegar and it comes up like new. Make sure you wear thick rubber gloves, eye protection and overalls though ;) This also works well with alloy casings like gearboxes, but you need a stronger caustic solution and don't leave it on too long as it will eventually dissolve the alloy

This thread has revealed something that I didn't know about Spaceways - there are definitely two different types of cooker unit - side by side in this pic

Image

The left hand one is possibly the most common and is definitely found in OG 1966 and 1967 Spaceways. The unit on the right may be a very early version (are there any pre 66 Spaceways?) and differs by having
- a fixed water tank behind a solid ply wall (cupboard door in the later units) together with an early Whale pump/tap,

- different hinges on the small cupboard door,

- separate demountable hinges at the rear of the top cover (which has black laminate rather than Virr Varr) rather than the alloy strip,

- different rear fixing for the warming rack.

- The Argyll cooker on these units has enamelled legs whereas the later units don't have legs and the cooker is fitted on to alloy rails at the sides of the hood unit.

I may have missed something so please add to this list - it's like a 'spot the difference' game

Brian

Hi Brian

Do you still have both of these cooker units? as I was wondering if they are both the same size? I have the earlier right hand unit but I'm presently getting a version mirrored over to fit into a LHD and wanted the double door version. In your photo the right hand unit looks squatter, with the drawer looking lower, any help would be appreciated thanks Kevin

Hi Kevin
Good to see you last weekend. This week I acquired another complete Spaceway cooker unit - an early version with fixed front panel and black top. Just like the one on the right in the pics above. It has the top latch in the right place (centre of lid) and an early 'sloping handle' Whale tap like the early 60s Caravettes which may have been retro-fitted. A previous owner has also fitted a hinged side door with a lock so the water tank can be accessed and removed - a sensible modification IMO.
To answer your question (a year late!) the units are pretty much the same dimensions.

1965/66 unit (black top, fixed LH front panel)

Top 43.5 X 56.3 cm
Height from floor 66.0
Floor to drawer top 43.0
Floor to drawer bottom 35.2

1966/67 unit (VirrVarr top, two front doors)

Top 44.0 X 55.5
Height from floor 65.6
Floor to drawer top 42.5
Floor to drawer bottom 35.8

Interestingly the black top has the bracket on the underside into which the stay fixes when it is used on the cargo door under the shaving mirror. I think this cooker unit came from Cornwall a couple of years ago when somebody took a Spaceway interior out to fit a 'custom' interior.

I now know that the 1966/67 cooker units come in two sub-species - one with internal flush hinges like the one on left in pics above, and one like Spankers with 'external' hinges on all doors like those on the small door on early units. So we now have 3 variants. I think the external hinged door units came between the early ones and the internal hinged late units.

I now also have two NOS (yes really) 1971/72 Moonraker cookers and a 1972 Moonraker unit. I therefore claim cooker unit 'nerd of the year' prize ;) A bit like the Mercury prize but in oak.

I'll have a look in shed 38b - there's a stack of cookers in that one. What are the dimensions of the cooker?
