3 devon Awning rails ? Advice please

Post by Fuch77 » Wed Aug 02, 2017 10:48 am

I have kept all the parts that ever got broken replaced or just feel off my Devon 67.
It was so many years ago i can not remember where on the van they came off.
Now the time has come to have them all repaired and put back on the van i find i have three awning rails?
Can anyone say why?
i can think two could have gone on the roof on each side and the third seems to have some over spray from the lower body colour .
Making me think it was low on the van some place.
Can anyone shine some light on this please?

One on the roof, one below the doors (for the awning skirt?) and one behind the front seats for the hammock.

G will be along in a bit to correct me!

^^^ WHS is my understanding yes

I think the roof is usually more of a I( shaped profile and the sill below the doors is more of a [ shaped profile

and yes below the doors is for the awning skirt, I think you should have poppers over the rear wheel arch for that too

Did someone call?
OK..
I want to buy some OG rails..

IIRC would need to check...

Roof rail for a standard day awning is 82"
Rail below cargo doors is 59".
Cross van transverse cot rail is half a roof rail at 41"

The correct profile is with an almost flat base..(slight curve) and the sides are square up from the base..curving over at the top. The gap is around 3mm with predrilled holes in the base which are countersunk.
In order to fit the fixings there is a larger diameter hole.
The bus as supplied was painted. The rail unpainted.

My MY 65 Caravette original paint came with a Devon tent and has an extra long rail on the roof attached with screws.
My MY 64 Caravette roof rail was riveted in place. My 64 had been repainted and the rails sprayed as well.
They were stripped and polished and fitted.
The lower rail is filed and shaped to meet the wheel arches.
I sat my rail on caulk and fitted it with stainless countersunk slotted cushion bolts and nylon nuts before re the headlining was fitted.
My vans have poppers round the wheel arches for the awning skirt...
And Devon steps..

Depending on the length you bus may have had Devon tent or a rail fitted on cab side of division..

Seems they have the same profile?
Hopefully you can see from the photo (my first upload on this site)
two are 83 " or 215cm and the third is 63" or 160cm and can see the sea blue pray.
does this shine any more light ?

They are the same profile as my roof mounted rail (1967 Devon) - Graham (Type21f) wasn't sure about my profile he thought it should be square'er - but Devon had a habit of using anything they could find....

Graham - I wasn't aware that rails (even roof?) were not painted when leaving Devon factory - only bare alloy? - really?

I have had lots of discussions on this..
Strangely this makes sence to me..
Unpainted..but different fixings.

Fit pop top fit machine screws. Never checjed if mine are screws or machine screws on 65.
Said screws but now not sure!

Tin top drill hole use rivet..

On my 65 I have a Devon Tent rail.
The bus is OG paint except the impact repaint at the rear.
Never repainted just tarted where damage or rot..
Cill repainted with house paint on cill rail no OG paint on rail.

On the 64 the roof had been repainted.
Take off the rail with paint on it..
Strip rail all one hue matched blow over.
Paint under rail different hue..
faded?
No I think paint got on rail on repaint!

Who knows!

Sadly my holes were plugged so long ago i can not remember.
I for sure remember the one above the cargo door...vaguely remember the one below it.
Would the low one be fitted above the deluxe trim? and can anyone link me to a photo of that as i was thinking of re fitting them ?
Maybe it did have one both sides?
I do NOT remember any holes in the roof where it would have come off on the opposite driver side.
i may have to dig out some some very old hard copys of photos from the early days and study them
