Where to put an oil cooler

Where to put an oil cooler

Post by Wellsy » Sun Feb 07, 2010 11:26 pm

I've got a big engine on the cards so want to start planning the ancillaries.

I've been told an ideal place to put it is above the gas bottle tray and then circle saw holes in the tray then have a fan to flow air through it and out.

I suppose because I'm asking here I'm not convinced but if the cooler was out side the engine bay and the fan was blowing down through the tray , would it work well.

With the big engine and giving it some Timpson, I'd think that the engine bay air would be warm and you'd be blowing it through the cooler?

Mines fitted on the nearside, in front of the rear wheel at a angle to allow the cooler air to flow though it. Got a fan on it too for when sitting in traffic. Not had a problem on the present engine, time will tell on the next.

i had mine in the engine bay and it deffo runs hotter although it did do its job but it did get very hot at eurobuggin last year. My engine is out at the moment and i am mounting the cooler and the fan under the bus in between the chassis rails will take some pics if you like.

cheers, yes please.

But rather than having the oil cooler in the engine bay , I was wondering about mounting it under the gas bottle tray. There is cool air in the engine bay which the fan would force out as thats the air which cools the engine.

a bit like this

That's better than in the engine bay, but 2 things come to mind firstly exhust heat and secondly stones flicking up from the wheel so would need some protection.

I presonally think the vents in the engine bay struggle to supply a larger engine (therefore needing more intake air), as well as fan running 25% higher than stock (remember the stock natural rev limit was around 4500rpm)

I am pretty sure the engine bay is under significant depression at 70mph, so your cooler won't be getting the air it needs as the cooling fan and engine will be sucking harder than any electric fan

Mine is mounted between the chassis rails in front of the rear wheel, Also angled to draw more air.
Works very well here.

All good valid reasons thanks.

I'll stick it in the chassis rails.

I've got a 13 row mocal cooler bolted to the torsion bar tube. Seems to get good airflow and keep my engine (1955cc) at the right temp.

Had the cooler in the same place when the engine was in my bay with very good results.
'it just bolts right up...'
