Hi,
I was wondering what sort of BHP and Torque needed to get in.
Say I have a early panel, there is no interior, straight axle and lowered (if that makes some difference to E/T times - air resistance).
I know gearbox ratios and tyre size will affect performance, but there must be a minimum amount of energy needed to get the times needed.
Looking at engine options, so could do with some advice. I already have a type 4 with twin 40's IDF (both under the workbench). I also have an AS41 case.
Cheers,
Dom.
BWA Power Question...
Re: BWA Power Question...
Approx 120 plus horsepower is what's needed.
I had a type IV with a set of 40's and a good BAS exhaust and it just scraped in with a 17.8 - I thought it would be a lot quicker than that.
Reckon with a stripped out panel you may get away with a little less power but not much unless you're going to put a really short ration box in it.
Hope that helps

Re: BWA Power Question...
Cheers Orb, I take it that is 120 at the flywheel. What sort of torque did your engine produce?
Re: BWA Power Question...
Yep, 120 at the flywheel.
Not sure what torque it made, never had it on the dyno so the 120bhp is a bit of a "seat of the pants" dyno having had a number of fast motors and knowing what sort of times others have run and what power they're making.
Torque is great and will help get you rolling but once your moving power is king

Re: BWA Power Question...
Careful or you will get hooked! I started with an 1835cc motor and couldn't get near the 18s iirc so went to 2332, then 2332 with fuel injection and turbo and now I'm on nitrous also so probably about 450bhp plus if I want.
I struggled to get under 18 for quite a while as it looked easy but I soon found it to be quite a skill in getting everything to come together.
Five years down the line I'm chasing 12s, my PB is 14.1 without nitrous and being conservative off the line.
That's my ultimate goal anyway.
It's all about the 60 ft times the rest is relatively easy
Good luck!

Re: BWA Power Question...
Thanks, well I have a type 4 from a 1700 fuel injection 411, did have 2 litre heads barrels and pistons etc. but sold then when I was skint!. Am I right in thinking that the 1700 puts out about 75hp, and the 2 litre 90ish. So it sounds like you have to tune a 2 litre quite a bit to get the times!!tufty65 wrote:Careful or you will get hooked!

In the early 90's I had a bay that I put in a 2 litre that I had tuned up (well polished the heads and threw it together). It used to go really well (erm drank petrol), until it spat out a valve guide at 80...Going to have to build something properly this time.
Cheers,
Dom.

The Porsche 914 1700cc put out 80hp but the Bus 1700cc only 66HP, and again the Porsche 2.0 made 94HP but the 2.0 bus engine only 69HP.
it's all in the engine code and the fuel incjection system. Some 412s had the same engine as the VW/Porsche 914.
My Type 4 was a W code (914) 1700 but with bigger 96mm pistons making it 1911cc. It had some Twin 40s off an alpha and Dyno'd at 99.8 BHP
This pushed my beetle to a personal best of 16.01 with the belt on, and 15.53 with the Belt off.
So I'd be surprised if it would make a dent in the BWA in a bus... It may get you in the 18s tho'...
