OUR VAN IN THE LOCAL NEWSAGENT

Post by cassie »

Hi
I know this has come up before but thought I would post anyway REGARDING COPYRIGHT

Wifey went into local newsagent and there on a card was our van in all its splendid glory
She then bought all 6 cards

It is nice to see that people apprecaite the work that has gone into our van and recognise it and the fact they feel it is good enough to put on cards and make a few quid great

I do not any real issue with this as I am of the understanding that the person taking the photo owns the copyright - photos were taken back in 2009 when our bus appeared in VW Camper and Bus

I have taken a look at the website on the rear of the card and they have 1000's of pics that can be purchased that have been sold to them by misc photographers - website link below that is our van and other VW campers

Wonder if anyones else has their vehicle on here?
One love, one heart, lets get together and feel alright

My old panel has just been put on a calendar for 2014. I found it in wh smiths and was really happy to get on it, then felt really , really happy for whoever makes lots of money off the back of it :)

My bus was on the front of 'Frosts' catalogue.

No idea where the pic came from.

So let me get this right then.

If someone takes pictures of your bus, then they own the rights to that photograph?

Does that mean if I go around taking pictures of peoples vehicles with or without their permission, I can legally use them for my own financial gain?

Just trying to clarify things. Anyone know the answer?

As soon as you press the shutter it belongs to you and you have copyright.
You may not like it but thats how they get pics of celebs and then sell then to the press.
The celebs don't like it but as long as its not an invasion of privacy.

So someone can take a picture of your bus at a show and then they can sell anything with that picture on it.
There's nothing you can do about it.
Even if you wanted to stop themm have you really got enough money to hire a lawyer?
They don't come cheap... well rubbish ones do, but you'd never win.

Another good example is Google street view. They may hide faces and number plates, but thats all.

There are exceptions to that rule.
If I wanted to take a photo of the Angel of the North or The Gherkin (or my lawnmower) and use in in an advert then I'd need permission from Anthony Gormley or Swiss RE (or me) who own the sculpture and the building.

So if you bus turns up in a FatFace ad without your permission it would be worth staking a claim as the photographer clearly didn't get you to sign a 'release' for the use of your bus in advertising, even though he took the picture.

Reading that again, I'm not so sure I need my own written permission to use my lawn mower in my advert, unless I was overly paranoid that I might sue myself.
But the rest still stands.

How funny.......as I was in Croyde the other week on holiday and noticed that the Saltrock show was selling canvas pics of a few buses from the club (unfortunatley not mine, or I would have bought one  )

There was the Murphy panel van, the gold (??) 23 window, and a lovely SWR 23 window (all of which I have seen in the magazines as features).

I can only imagine what a buzz it was to see cards of your pride and joy for sale, allowing everyone to love your van

Phil. :D

When I bought my pick up the PO told me that the van was used in an advert for an insurance company, he saw the advert in one of the bus mags rang them up for a quote and the answer he got back was that they can't insure that kind off vehicle for some reason.
They didn't know what to say when he told them that they used his van in their ad but then couldn't insure it for him.
