What Webers have I got?

Post by Doka Dave » Wed Sep 26, 2012 7:52 pm

Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question but I bought a fully functioning 2.1 waterboxer years ago that came with a pair of meaty webers that I have now taken off.

Thing is, I have no idea what type/kind of Webers they are and I know this is going to be difficult without a picture of them but I'm not that techno savvy enough to try and upload a picture  so I'll try my best to describe them verbally!

They are twin carbs (obviously) and each side has two separate throttle chambers (if that's what they call the?) - and have Weber written on left and right middle front side and have the "W"(ish) weber logo just above the RH one.
They are a bit crusty but throttles all work ok and the carbs open and close smooth enough.

I just wondered if anybody knows what they could be? I know webers were fitted on lots of cars but is there any way I can work out what they are?
Also, would they work on an aircooled engine if they worked fine on a waterboxer? I want to build a 1776 eventually and wondered if these would be ok.

Thanks for any pointers,
Dave

is there 4 chokes or two?

four, ie 1 per cylinder, odds are they are 36 or 40IDF's

if its just one choke per head, odds are they are 34ICT

they will be stamped near the flange where they bolt to the inlet manifolds.

they might be different to the above... try and find pics online that are simmilar to yours if you cant upload pics, then i can be more exsact....

look on google images for weber IDF or ICT.... copy n paste the pic link on here....?

Thanks for the reply, I did a google image search and they look like 44IDFs to me albeit well used.

Are these any good for a 1776 or would they be too thirsty?

Get a tape measure and measure the width of the of the choke ie one of the holes in the top of the carb. That's what determines what size they are although it should be stamped on them somewhere.

Where would it be stamped on them normally?
The carbs are a bit pitted but if I knew where I was looking........

I'll measure the carb size too.
Cheers for that,

Usually cast/stamped into the body at manifold end. Should def have 'Weber' cast into the body somewhere.
