When I had some work done on my first Beetle at a transport company in Leeds back in 1991 the 2 retired old boys who started the company showed me a photo album with 2 RHD '54 Panel vans in it, they said they were the first VW Vans in Yorkshire. If I ever go back to Leeds I will drop in and see if it is still there, it had been passed down to the 2 sons, but that was 20 years ago! I know, useless without pics, right

Resurrecting this thread!

Any more input on UK-supplied Barndoors? I find it difficult to believe that this is it! Surely there must be some more photographic evidence of UK registered buses out there (old 1950s/60s photos)?

That's a great find Neil! Thanks for posting!

The ATW letters means it was registered in Essex between August and December 1954.

I know where this bus is, as it is down the road from me at a mates house. I will ask him if he has the birth certificate, I believe he does, but will let you know.

Cheers, Sean.

In 1959 at the age of three somewhere in Gloucestershire I was introduced to my first VW, a Kombi in which the family took holidays in wildest Wales and highland Scotland. I remember sleeping over the engine and waking to dodge the overnight condensation dripping onto my ex-WD sleeping bag."

Having a flick through some old threads and realised you don't have the 'shell oil round Britain' 54 bus.
