Do I need an MOT to register a 66 import ?

Post by calisplitsteve » Mon Jul 15, 2019 10:39 am

Hi all :)

New to the club!

I have a 1966 split import from US and need to register it soon.
As it’s a 1966 I think that makes it MOT exempt in the UK but do I still need an MOT to register for the first time ?

Also, can the SSVC provide a valid proof of age certificate for my bus so that I can use it as a supporting document?

Thanks in advance!

Steve

Nope! No mot needed, I did ours a couple of months ago, got a letter from the club for dating purposes and a man came out to check it exists and is roadworthy (in his opinion, based purely on looks )
5 days after his visit I had my v5c

You can get a data sheet from VW UK or via the VW classic parts website that includes the build and delivery dates. It's not cheap (around £45), but should be a lot quicker than a full birth certificate. https://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de ... blatt.html

(The full "birth certificate" is the document that takes months to get and costs about £70. It's useful if you want to find what options your vehicle came with, if it was built before Oct '58, but the data sheet has the dates you'll need for registration if you don't have a title document.)

Email VWUK with the chassis number and they will supply a dating letter free.
