21 WINDOW VS 15 WINDOW BUS

Post by DOLFIE » Tue Dec 05, 2017 7:44 pm

I am looking to buy a Deluxe bus and find myself a bit indecisive between two buses.

1963 15 window Samba (1645cc in good shape but in need of some TLC)
OR
1967 21 window Samba (2095cc-heavily modified-detailed interior) - 15/20K more expensive than the 15w.

Which bus would you SSVC members on here recommend?

All suggestions gratefully welcome

15 window anytime no roof skylights to worry about and great view all round while driving. I do own one though

If you're gonna camp in it then a 15 all day long but like Buzzers I have one too...
They're also rarer....more 21 and 23's made than 15's
Packed a few belongings and headed out to Pirates Cove. In my buddy’s old grey Kombi we rolled until the gas got low.....

1965 11 Window aka 'Rustina'.
1961 Beetle.

for me it would be the 15 window, with all the uncertainty surrounding the new MOT rules verses VHI and modified busses I would not be considering anything heavily modified until we know more about what the outcome of this will be.

15 every time, earlier buses look nicer and those corner windows make it stand out from anything you see on the roads today

Another vote for 15. They just look 'right'.

I'll go for the 21 window bus, because I don't like the look of the rear corner windows

If you go for the 15 make sure it is really a 63 not a later Brazilian pretending to be an earlier bus (there are quite a few that are missing registered)

There's a few original 13 Windows 'converted' to 15's too. Happily VW Birth Certificated confirms mine is genuine :D
Not sure I'd buy one today without the back up of a BC though.....

I agree, 15's are rare, real one's, my 21 doesn't have corner windows, that's reserved for 23's, again real one's. 64 21 window+66 Westy.
Privacy, sleep-overs are great in the westy and I like the larger rear window in So Cal traffic. Sunroofs are great for farting friends though.

I would choose a 15 any time I have a real fondness for them, I will have a 61 walkthrough one if I ever get round to building it

13/15/21/23 window busses are all hard to find in a budget & condition that you want. If I were you I wouldn't be bothered so much about the windows, more about finding the right bus for the budget you have.

All are lovely busses, and you'll love which ever you find I'm sure.

Good luck & fun hunting
