Off to Ireland, any recommendations?

Post by 8 8US » Wed Aug 09, 2017 9:44 pm

We're off to Ireland on Friday for a couple of weeks in the bus, will be catching up with Tony & Manda but can anyone recommend other great things to do?

We're heading through Dublin, onto Carbury (Co Kildare) then Ballinlough (Co Roscommon), Galway, Westport, Enniskillen, Portrush, Belfast and back to Dublin.

Drives, sites, walks, climbs, eats, drinks etc or any VW shows/meets?

Cheers

Richard

Excellent, thanks should be "flying" past you on the 25th on our way to Crawfordsburn where we are stopping to access Belfast.

We had a fantastic touring holiday all around Ireland a few years ago (before kids!) - we had a great time - the north Antrim coast is stunning, but definitely go to The Giants Causeway whilst your there if you can - its one of the wonders of the world!

They used to have some terrible roads! - we actually broke a shock absorber on the road from Dublin to Belfast - but the roads have improved a lot in the last few years with a lot of EU money! (that road is now a motorway!)

The pubs and pub culture with the diddly diddly music is great - maybe not so much in the North, but further south live trad Irish music in every pub..... (but I can't imagine you going to many pubs Rich! hahahahaha)

I love Ireland - the whole country and it's people are so friendly - it's a great place to Holiday.

Thanks Ted, we're stopping 5 miles from Giants Causeway so it is on the list, as well as pubs, well that's all research now!

Catch up soon and thanks for sending the charger for the walkie talkie.

Welcome to the Emerald Isle! I'm based in Castlederg not far from Tony and Manda. Meet them a few times. Great guys.

If you like hills and walks. Try take in the Mourne mountains and base yourself in Newcastle. It's incredible. When you hit Portrush, the drive from there all the way to Carrickfergus is one of the best driving roads in the world. BBC one show highlighted it all last week. When leaving Ballycastle make sure you take the Torr Road all the way to Cushendun. Stay a night in cushendun and enjoy a pint of Guinness with Randal at the Rope works bar. He's a local historian/vet/solicitor/publican. Runs the bar from his back room. He'll like your van. True Ireland stuff.

I have to say a massive thank you to Tony & Amanda Chamberlain for their hospitality, a wonderful place to stay, amazing views, a fantastic dinner last night, open fire, great conversation and a bottle of JD, then enough breakfast this morning to sink two battleships!!

You two really are the best.

And thanks to Pete67 and Amy for the respite from the rain and drinks on our journey north from Tony's, we really appreciate the kind offer of drinks from complete strangers who I would now regard as friends.

Cheers
