new here so hello. a debate on original paint

Post by DasBootch » Tue Jan 28, 2014 7:05 pm

Hello everybody,

I've been out of the scene for ten years or so. but after a recent windfall I've wanted to purchase another split. i found a nice looking 1960 mango in Florida which i'm no importing. the bus has 95% original paint which is in very good condition the other 5% has gone via the tin worm. it will require some sills, a dog leg, a tiny amount of gutter work, and a few other tiny holes on the rear quarters.

So my question is whats the best may to tackle a repaint. do i just do the new panels and rust repairs and try to match in the paint best i can a run it patina. or would an entire blow over, over the original paint be better.

i don't have an astronomical budget but want the best looking bus i can. i would prefer patina i think. buts what are your opinions?

Welcome.

It won't be long before someone corrects me if I'm wrong, but I'd imagine most restorers would keep the original paint if it's in nice patina'd condition, and just blend in any repair areas by painting.

Put some pics up when you can.

thanks, she came up at very reasonable money on the samba. as i have a limited budget i wanted to pick up something with required work that would fall within that. i've been looking over a year. so really happy with her.

Paint the areas that have been repaired then rub them back to match the patina on the bus, a paint shop will be able to match the paint.

Nice bus, mango scene is getting bigger

Hello and welcome to Mango mania.
Looks fantastic as it is so my view would def be repair and blend in where you can as you never get OG paint a second time round. BUT at the end of the day it's your bus, you decide.
Great purchase.

Wow that paint looks fantastic. I'd definitely be blending in the repaired areas rather than respraying the entire bus. When it polishes up like that, why repaint?
