Re: What's your cruising speed and engine/gearbox setup ?

60 ish for me, 1641, twin 40's, straight axle, Bug Box (Think 1500 ratios) and 185/65 tyres, seems just as happy to sit at 70 but I dont have any worry gauges to see if the temps are creeping up at that.

Re: One for the engine experts, popping noise on tickover

Havent seen the video, stupid work PC, but popping on tickover (assuming it is a noise from the exhaust) is normally running lean, if the mixture screw is a little loose they can adjust themselves with engine vibration etc, so maybe worth a little tweak of the adjustment screw?

Re: who makes the best 1914 barrels and Pistons

Mahle are your best bet, and as above the forged are better, having said that I have a set of Cast 1914 in my bug and it has been fine for years and gets much abuse :-).... Lots of the other Empi/AA etc are all far east.

Re: Axel Tubes

Yes it does need a little free play, you 'shim' the axles by adding or taking away the paper hexagonal gaskets. If SA the axle should just drop under its own weight, not sure how that translates to an axle with the weight of a RGB on the end....

Ooops, forgot to mention, that 6m was just for the Devon cushions, so does not include the front bench seat.

Re: How much material needed to cover the cushions

Which cushions? and what type of interior?

We bought 6m for our '60 Devon and have probably 1.5m (ish) left over. Always handy to get a bit more than you need in case you need to make any future repairs or have a sudden yearning for matching scatter cushions....! :D

Re: Super unleaded in aircooled engines

I don't think there is any need, unless you are building a high performance high compression engine you really are not going to see any benefits. Just normal unleaded is the ticket for anything stock or mildly tuned.

Re: Ordering shock absorbers

As above, unless you can see it is going to be a delay for when you need them then wait a bit until you have as much as possible pinned down then take your measurements.

Sure sounds like stripped splines on the drum, not sure how readily available 'modified drums' are, maybe try someone like Type 2 Detectives??
