Re: Birth Certificate "Samba" anomaly

The word "Samba" as I understand it is an Americanism. The VW term was "Sonderbus" - sunbus and refers specifically to the roof windows and sliding roof (letting the sun in). Anything else 13 or 15 windows would be a "deluxe" (microbus). I am surprised to hear VW using the term "Samba"

Re: No registration number

Send me the chassis number details, or previous owner records, anything you have and I will see if we have anything on record. SSVC records go back over 30 years. vanregister@ssvc.org.uk.

Re: Pearl White

In the last pictures the air box cover looks like pearl white (L87). The Column bracket looks like Light Grey (L345). Cant tell anything from the earlier pics.

Re: Year registration query

I guess the choice is yours but realistically registration would be at least 3-4 months after build. Mine was built 16th Dec 1964, registered 1st April 1965 in UK. Bear in mind though, in that time it went to Sidmouth and was fitted with it's camping interior.

Re: Club Stickers - What to do.

Personally I just keep 1983 and the latest one on the van, all the others are stuck to a spare glass in the lounge.

Re: 1960. pop out window colour?

Same colour as the top half of the van. If it's Dove Blue all over then - Dove Blue.

Re: King and link pin rebuild Q's

If you have king pin play, the chances are you have rusty king pins. if so they will need to be replaced - not cheap, but as I said, keep on top of the maintenance and you only do the job once. If you are very lucky, new bushes might take out any play that you have but experience tells me that is un...

Re: King and link pin rebuild Q's

Most importantly. In over 30 years of messing about with these vans, I have NEVER encountered a worn out king pin !!! Every one I have had to replace has been rusty ! The Service schedule says grease every 3000 miles. Greasy king pins can't go rusty ! So it's all down to neglect really. Fix it once ...

Re: King and link pin rebuild Q's

OK - two different conversations going on here. King & Link pins form the steering knuckles on the ends of the axle beam. Easy to remove as a whole. To dismantle you need a 30 tonne press and a couple of press jigs. All replacement parts are available. Reaming the bushes is probably the easiest bit,...

Plate says Panel Van built in June 1963. So early features are all correct. Major changes were mostly August 1963.

Re: Puck Nose Weight

It will be totally dependent on how you load it. You need nose weight for towing stability. Upper limits will be set by your towbar manufacturer and the vehicle manufacturer but these are normally much higher than you would achieve. Ideal nose weight can be roughly calculated as 7% of maximum gross ...
