Driving to lake Como

Hi, thinking of driving to Lake Como in our split back end of June. Has anyone done it? Not concerned about distance, been around France and Spain in 30 degree+ heat no problem. It’s the Mountains that’s concerning me. Just how severe are the hills? Is there a route through the alps that doesn’t inv...

Industrial unit

Hi everyone. I’m struggling to find a decent place to store my Splitty over the winter and somewhere to keep it during the summer when I’m not using it at the weekend . I’m guessing I’m not the only one with this problem. Therefore would anybody be interested in going 3 or 4 ways on a small industri...

Re: Crankshaft binding after torquing case bolts

Reet, think mine are 8mm so I'm going to torque them to the lower setting when I get home and see what occurs. Have yet to check the dizzy drive. Should have probably just added all this to my last post! I shall report back

Re: Crankshaft binding after torquing case bolts

25 ft Ibs for the bearing bolts and 14 for the others as per John muirs book, although if I back them off a bit it spins fine.
I am slightly confused (doesn't take a lot) by the torque settings in the John muir book. Next to the 25 ft Ibs it has 18 ft Ibs in brackets. Did vw change the thread sizes?

Re: Crankshaft binding after torquing case bolts

Cases are still together, I had no intention of splitting them as the rest of the engine is in such good nick. only thing left on is flywheel and dizzy drive shaft. Crank was turning fine until I checked the case bolts and nipped them up. Engine ran fine before I took it out. Only stripped it becaus...

Crankshaft binding after torquing case bolts

Hi. Stripped my 1600tp engine whilst it was out of the bus. Everything looked in good shape apart from a cracked head. Cases still together and rods are off. Crank turned freely until I re torqued the case nuts! If I get a ratchet and socket on the pulley nut I can turn the crank and it moves freely...

Re: Clunking sound from bottom end when rocking crankshaft back and forth

Put the bottom end on top of a big clean plastic tub yesterday and poured a load of degreaser through it to give it a good flush out. Never noticed anything in the bottom of the tub but I'll double check tomorrow. Minds at rest now that I know it's just the gears meshing. Need to get it rebuilt, sun...

Re: Clunking sound from bottom end when rocking crankshaft back and forth

Oh, already done that! By rocking it back and forth I mean rotating flywheel clockwise/anti-clockwise a few degrees. Is it normal to hear the timing gear in this situation? As I say spinning the crank produces no noise at all. I've done around 5-6000 miles in it since buying it 2years ago. There are...

Clunking sound from bottom end when rocking crankshaft back and forth

Hi all. First time posting on this forum so bear with me. Stripped my 1600tp engine down as there was a slight rattle and a couple of small oil leaks. Was taking it out anyway to drop gearbox. The engine is in really good shape barring a cracked head and slight wear on no3 small end bearing. I'm rel...
