Re: VW Specialists in Cornwall

Well, very pleased to report a trouble free trip. 5 passengers, 500kg of kit 1000 miles and the crewcab ate the hills and never missed a beat. I've a few issues to follow up on (generator light coming on on idle after long runs and gearbox getting stiff and trixy after long stints in 4th) but I coul...

Re: VW Specialists in Cornwall

Cheers Caveman, everything looking good so far. MOT was a pass and I've just done an hour and a half of trouble free test driving. Looking forward to the trip.

Just one last job to do, a new set of Safari seals from Buttys Bits to go on, as the weather forecast is crap!

Re: VW Specialists in Cornwall

Absolutely understood, just good to know that if the worst happens, there are some options beyond a tow truck!

VW Specialists in Cornwall

So, my van is coming back to me tomorrow, after an MoT, service, new fuel tank and some professional TLC. Fingers crossed, we'll be doing the London to Cornwall run next week. Everything should be fine, but, this van doesn't have the best reliability record out there...... If, hypothetically speakin...

Re: dodgy fuel pump?

Well, turned out it was a problem in the fuel tank. The seal for the fuel sender had perished and deposited a load of gunk into the tank, that was blocking the in-line filter before the pump and stopping enough fuel getting through to the second bowl filter in the engine bay. On investigation, also ...

Re: dodgy fuel pump?

Oil level is normal, and doesn't smell of fuel - the fuel pump is an aftermarket electronic one, a Facet. Am I right in thinking that the easiest way to test it is to discounnect the fuel line from the carb then turn on the ignition - if I get good flow the pump is probably OK and the problem is som...

dodgy fuel pump?

Came home on the truck of shame today :( Was cruising happily at 60, then out of nowhere the engine really started to struggle. Ran fine at half-throttle, but above that, nothing. It ran, but was gutless, like it was being strangled. I limped on for a bit, but then got defeated by a slip road on a h...

Cover - VW Heritage Delux, flat roof.

Hi, I have one of these covers for sale. https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/split-bus/AC8986405/cover-bus-50-72-flat-roof-deluxe/?crumbStartPage=1&crumbStartRow=1 Never used as it didn't fit over the high hoops on my crewcab. Retails for £170, I'm looking to get £120 back for it. Can post (at extra cos...

I had the same problem and the same fix too. If that's the cause for you, very simple and very cheap.

Re: Paranoid about my engine

Well, didn't get the chance to change the oil this weekend, but did have the van out for about 50 miles during the course of the day. Lots of stop start so the engine was running for about 3hrs total. Kept stopping to check temps using the "does the dipstick burn my fingers" technique and it didn't....

Re: Paranoid about my engine

Thanks all, earth strap is fine, no changes were made to the carbs since it was last on the r/r and the timing was re-checked when the engine went back in. Compression test was fine also, though I can't remember the exact results. Consensus seems to be that the oil is to thin so I'm going to change ...
