Front hub nuts (Locking)

As requested here are some photos of the hub nuts Genuine on the left (from Coolair That's the price of a pair BTW) Repro on the right from Wolfsburg Resto's The repro ones do look to have a flat recess and it doesn't look like it will bind on the side. However, at almost twice the price of the genu...

Re: Front Wheel bearings

Just ordered a pair of second hand, genuine ones from Coolair. I'll send the repro ones back when they get here. Thanks for the heads up How much are they from Coolair? I've been caught out by other traders using OG images then sending out repro. It says second hand and genuine VW on the listing. I...

Re: Front Wheel bearings

Well you live and learn! Anyway they are back in and all is good. I've ordered a pair of bay window hub lock nuts which I'll put on, instead of the locking washer arrangement, when they arrive. Thanks for the help. I wouldn't have attempted it without the guidance and then I'd be even more out of po...

Re: Front Wheel bearings

I took them to the welders and he popped them out. I told him the recognised method which he ignore LOL He tack welded a disc inside each race and punched them out from the back. One came out just from him heating the hub, turning it over and giving it a whack on the bench (in case anyone wants to t...

Re: Front Wheel bearings

Managed. It is in fact much easier to get them off not using the slots but rather getting a screwdriver in the bits that aren't slots and gently hammering around that whole area. The side that was making the noise seemed to be adjusted as I would expect. I was able to move the washer with a screwdri...

Re: Front Wheel bearings

Arrgg I can't even get the fecking hub cover off.
Putting a meaty screw driver into the small slot and levering/hammering the end results in a bent screw driver!
Oh the joy

I'll try a little bit of heat and see what happens

Re: Front Wheel bearings

Oh and where do folk buy them? Re: Front Wheel bearings

Follow up queries! Should I do both sides (i.e. both wheels) while I'm doing it? They've only been in there 5 years and about 10,000 miles is that a normal lifespan? Is it likely that the races are worn or just the bearings? If the races aren't subject to any rotational wear, since nothing moves aga...

Front Wheel bearings

Just had MOT (passed without issue) but he mentioned that one of the front wheel bearings was noisy. I can't find anything about how to adjust them, can someone point me in the right direction? If they need replacing where can I get a quality set from and are they different on different years etc? 1...
