Just a quick thought, if your brakes are adjusted quite tight, are you sure you have a little touch of freeplay on your master cylinder actuator rod?, maybe the brakes are binding on a touch with use of the brake pedal, or as it gets warm in use. This exact thing happened to me. I adjusted the rod ...

Are you sure it ain't brake related ?
My first thought was that your soft lines were shot, but then you seem to say that the heating ins't due to excessive brake pressure ?

Beware of the extra length of the bikes... Hooked on the back, the bikes might be WAY larger than the bus...

I think there is a vehicle department in france that you pay about €100+ and they give you a three day pass that includes insurance to drive a vehicle out of france.
