Re: Going on Holiday Tool Kit and Spares

We started travelling through South America 9 months ago in our 59 Kombi. We started in Cartagena, we're now in Lima. Unless there's a change of plan, we should arrive in Montevideo in May/June. We've done about 15000km and haven't broke down once yet. We're carrying a load of spares and tools. I un...

Re: Unever front tyre wear - K&LP Beam.

Yes, toe-out is inner wear.. The VW manual / Bentley manuals list the exact tracking settings with the +/- range it should be within. Thanks, Jim. Spending a few days in a camp site just outside Lima so getting the opportunity to work on the van and put all things right and give it another service....

Re: Unever front tyre wear - K&LP Beam.

Thanks guys. So inner edge tyre wear is more likely to be as a result of improper tracking in my case and not camber. That's reassuring as I played close attention to my measurements and correct shim placement. As I understand it, tracking is toe, either in or out. This is adjusted by shortening or ...

Re: Engine dies after a few miles

Hey Frilly. How's this going? I'm guessing that after only 3 miles the engine isn't even getting up to operating temperature. I'm not in the UK but I imagine it's freakin cold. We're satisfied that the engine isn't getting too hot? Just as it's cut out and before it's had time to cool, can you hold ...

Uneven front tyre wear - K&LP Beam.

Hi Guys. About 15000km ago I replaced the early Bay beam that had been retrofitted onto my 59 split. I replaced it with a stock K&LP beam and I found some good OG stub axles (which I had "flipped" from someone on here). Fed up with never being able to get the thing to brake in a straight line on it'...

Re: Engine dies after a few miles

Did you get this sorted, Frilly? Sounds like it's getting too hot. You've eradicatd the coil (and BTW, always have a spare new coil in the van with you, same with plug leads and points - it'd be a shame to break down due to any of these things which are such a cinch to replace, maybe even a fuel pum...

Re: Single wipers?

I reconnected it, but the connecting rod would pop off the ball on the back of the spindle with a dramatic bang when I uaed the wipers. Same with my bus. I guess either the ball and/or the socket wear over the years. I wrapped the ball in insulating tape about 10 years ago and it hasn't disconnecte...

We've now arrived in Medellín, Pablo Escobar country. We did a 5 month recky in Colombia last year so we're pretty familiar with the place. Probably the ...

9000KM South American Journey in a 59 Bus.

Hi All. I wanted to share with you all our little journey that we are about to embark on in our 1959 bus. We're an English and Uruguayan couple who are old enough to know better and we're travelling from England to Uruguay via Colombia, Ecuador etc. etc. Our original estimate was that we'd cover 900...

Re: Shipping from Zimbabwe ??

Sorry to hear that. Or if you find yourself a local contact - a local resident with a flat bed would probably drive it to where you want, for what we consider to not be much money. Easier said than done, I guess.

Can the seller recommend anyone?

Re: Shipping from Zimbabwe ??

Hi Paul. We're are about to do the same, but from UK to Cartagena in northern Colombia. We're driving the Bus to Uruguay, meeting up with the mother-in-law, maybe stay for a cuppa tea, then driving back. It'll take us about 9 to 12 months and about 20,000KM. Check it out here: www.mundo-kombi.com We...
