Probably an old chestnut but help and advice please!

LOWERING!! How what where? Just putting the camper through some work and when we finally get him home the debate is to lower or not. I say run him as standard, son says SLAM (he would!) and wife says just a couple of inches! ('ooh matron' etc). Due to the extra basic work that has to be done (as always) the budget is being pushed so cost is a big consideration. Not very techy, but I understand the quick and cheap way leads to the wheels splaying and bad tyre wear, is that right? Are we looking at narrowed beams and notched chases? I am not going to slam but a few inches lower would be useful to get it in the garage...or would it be cheaper to raise the garage!?

So cost's recommendations anybody? Help!

Don't even go there unless you are prepared to spend a LOT of cash or you will end up with a bus that drives like a demented pig! Definitely raise the garage.

My sons are mad about lowering, but they also love other daft fashions like hoodies and iPads, so I ignore them especially when they ask for money.

Stay stock, spend the cash on camping, good mechanical stuff and good food and drink. And don't lower the wife by a couple of inches................................

i think dropped spindles and one spline at back would be a good compromise and increase the stability of the bus is side winds. it keeps you happy as its still useable, its lowered if only a bit so kid is kinda happy but most of all it will be lowered about 2 to 3 inch which makes mrs happy which lets face it is where its at in reality, vwgillybilly does the spindles cheap enough think they are just over 200 hundred and i would charge 150 to 200 quid to lower the back one spline and fit spindles, so that gives you a guideline to work to

^^^whs. If you want to slam it you can get away without tubbing/narrow beams etc as long as you don't want the rails scraping the floor. A cut and turn front beam plus twist of the splines will set you back about 300-ish or add anothe 100-ish for adjusters but the ride quality will suffer. Badly. Dropped spindles are worth the extra cost if you only want to go a few inches (said the bishop to the actress) as won't need to cut/twist the beam you'll retain the ride quality. I've got a cut beam with adjusters and I'm looking to fit dropped spindles and raise the adjusters up because my fillings have all rattled out....

Shalom, Lee

Ps Brian, your parents probably said the same aboit you when you were wearing flares and had long hair and sideburns

Maybe they did Lee - but I was long gone by then and never had sideburns. The rest is spot on though

Nothing wrong with a standard height bus. I have no intention of lowering mine. It's all in very fine mechanical order and handles fine. Cross winds are no real problem. Other than looks I don't really see any point in lowering. Yes a slammed bus is cool but i think they look weird with narrowed front beams.

Us Devon boys know a bit about cross winds and rough roads. Oi reckon most o' they lowered buses drive on proper smooth roads like in Essex --- wherever that be

Thanks for the replies, the cost doesn't seem as great as I was thinking. I agree that narrowed beams look a little odd to me too. My worry is ride quality, having had unlowered Bays in the past, comfort is important!

Also as I explained to the family we take so much camping stuff with us it's going to lower the bus anyway! I would like to get a decent roof rack to carry all our stuff...maybe that should come first.

One question if I lower a couple of inches by removing a spline(?) at the rear does that effect tyre wear at all?

once again thanks all for the advice.

Ian
