I may have need of a new engine for my bus and wondered if you could suggest the best places to look out for one. Don't have many pennies, maybe 20000 of them, but would like something which would run the bus well on long distance runs and if BWA membership comes in with it all the better.

I know its asking a lot, but any advice well received. Thanks.

VZi will turn up a few, I'd go for something with a bit more displacement rather than cammed up to the nine's if it's going in a bus. You can apparently do it with a fairly high tuned 1776 in a stripped out van but the larger the cc, the less stressed out it will be and nicer to drive.

THanks for the info. I will have a look on there. Presently it has an 1835 and this was good, but may have cooked it trying to limp home. My naivity I'm afraid as I didn't realise the fan was run at the back of the generator.

Anyway looking for the same if not better, but none of the replacements seem to cover 1835 yet it seems to be a standard bore for an upgrade. Not sure why, but any suggestions welcome as I think I need to do a lot of looking to find something good.

Thanks.

Is the 1835 beyond a rebuild? If it is rebuildable, you could save yourself a fair few bucks. Barrells and pistons arn't too much money and if the bottom end is still good or easy to sort, you may have money for better head's, cam or carbs.

How do you know it's beyond repair?

The story so far is that it is likely to be just the heads after the strip down today, so could maybe replace just the heads or perhaps top end??? I have been looking but can't find anywhere that seems to do replacement heads for the 1835. Does anyone know where they May come from?

During other conversations today on the matter I have been told that as I still have rgb's then running an 1835 is pointless as the speed will be limited and cause the engine to over rev causing it to overheat and crack the heads. As a result they said it was futile to run anything bigger than a basic engine with RGBs and so needs a new irs or straight axle before anything else.

In addition I have been told that the single carb I have is insufficien for that size engine and I need to upgrade both or it won't cope and will both overheat and crack heads.

Does all this sound likely and if so does anyone know of a resource to find out he best way forward to find how to increase the cooling and carbs as this isn't my strong point obviously.

I would like to rebuild if possible as I think that would be best all round, cost and cos there is nothing wring with the rest of the engine, but I am well out of ky depth now and not sure where to turn next.

Thanks for the help.

Type 1 heads aren't really CC specific. You need to look at the bore size and then order them or have them machined for that.

SSP or VW speedshop can help you there and mildly uprated ones are not too badly priced.

As for carb's well you will find there is lot's of opinion's available. The stock jetted one is IMHO too small for what you have though. I'd be looking for a set of Twin 40 DRLA's to run that engine. Maybe 36's if you can find them. See Euro Carb on the internet, they do reconditioned/new ones.

Ultimately, if you want to go quickly a IRS or straight axle conversion is needed. If you just want to cruise, you can still do so with a diff upgrade to the current set up. If you do go down the conversion route, you will end up lowering it at the same time, so you will need to to lower the front to match.

There is also a ideal rpm to keep the engine cool, above it you can cause it to overheat. That then opens up more option's to address it.

Oh and then there's brakes to stop you!!. It can add up.

For me, I'd address the engine problems with the future upgrades in mind, keep the speed down and get saving!!
